Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is inflammation of the small sesamoid bones located under the big toe joint. These bones act like pulleys to help the big toe move and absorb impact when you push off while walking. When they become irritated from repetitive pressure, sharp pain can develop in the ball of the foot beneath the big toe.

Common Symptoms

Pain beneath the big toe joint, especially when pushing off
Swelling or tenderness under the toe
Pain that increases during activity and improves with rest
Discomfort when wearing hard-soled or unsupportive shoes
A feeling like pressure is concentrated under the big toe

What Causes Sesamoiditis

Excessive pressure on the forefoot
High arches or foot shapes that shift weight forward
Sports involving jumping or pushing off the toes
Wearing thin-soled or inflexible shoes
Repetitive bending of the big toe

Without support, the sesamoid bones and surrounding tendons absorb too much strain with each step.

How Support Helps

Supportive insoles help redistribute pressure away from the sesamoid bones.
By stabilizing the foot and improving shock absorption, inflammation can calm and movement feels more comfortable.

Recommended Support

Orleans Arches support all four arches of the foot and help prevent excess pressure from loading into the big toe joint.

Proper Shoes Matter

Shoes with cushioning under the forefoot and protective support are essential.
A slightly stiffer sole can also help reduce bending through the big toe.
